John Tonsil, the Town Crier, can be seen in the Market Square ringing his bell and reading proclamations to the town folk. He is dressed in traditional 18th century costume as befits this ancient office. John was a winner of a national Town Crier competition for the loudest voice. He can be seen regularly at the "Dog and Duck Inn" on a Saturday night where his stentorian tenor voice sings out the old ballads and songs, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Myfawny Jones, or Madame Crystal, who plays by ear and knows every song of note. Meanwhile Betty Bitters, the barmaid, keeps everyone happy by her cheerful repartee during her pulling of pints.
